Terry Bradshaw has had a remarkable broadcasting career after retiring from . However, the 76-year-old's performances during his presenting duties have been under scrutiny this season, due to several on-duty errors and confrontations.
A four-time champion with the Pittsburgh Steelers, first joined the show in 1994 and has been a mainstay ever since. Despite being celebrated for his game knowledge, comprehensive analysis, and charismatic presentation style, Bradshaw has not been immune to criticism.
And while many fans hope to see him continue his presenting role for years to come, others have noticed an increasing number of mistakes made by the American football legend recently - as well as heated disputes with other members of the FOX team. Here, we delve into the iconic, humorous, and contentious moments from Bradshaw's latest season on FOX...
Live on-air apology to colleagueIn a hilarious on-air gaffe, Bradshaw was forced to eat humble pie and extend a live apology to NFL icon Rob Gronkowski in November. The blunder occurred after Bradshaw erroneously introduced Gronkowski as a temporary stand-in for Jimmy Johnson, causing an uproar of laughter following the Detroit Lions' emphatic 52-6 thrashing of the Jacksonville Jaguars.
In an awkward moment, Bradshaw addressed Gronkowski with: "The guy whose seat you're sitting in right now, filling in while he's on vacation, Jimmy Johnson." Michael Strahan set the record straight by interjecting: "He's not filling in, he's here all the time." Which prompted Gronkowski himself to chime in with: "Wow, yeah, I'm a part of the show, Terry. Where are you going with that?"
Acknowledging his faux pas, Bradshaw raised his hands in surrender, explaining: "Okay, I get it, I made a mistake. I apologise, Gronk. You know I love you."
Bradshaw has also had playful exchanges with Strahan, including during FOX's Thanksgiving pregame segment where they covered the Miami Dolphins' game against the Green Bay Packers. Bradshaw cheekily said that Tua Tagovailoa had managed to excel in snowy conditions ahead of his fixture at the Lambeau Field that day.
However, his claim that Tagovailoa was unaffected by adverse weather conditions was swiftly debunked. He said: "Mike McDaniel has got his quarterback back. Folks, you're in for a treat tonight because the weather doesn't bother Tua. This is going to be a fun game to watch."
Moments later, a graphic revealed that Tagovailoa had a poor record in cold weather, with a 1-7 record in games played at 50 degrees or lower, 0-4 in games played at 40 degrees or lower, and 0-2 in games where the weather was a maximum of 32 degrees. Strahan was left questioning Bradshaw's earlier statement, saying: "If the weather doesn't bother him? The weather obviously bothers the man."
This exchange was just one of several light-hearted disagreements between Strahan and Bradshaw throughout the season, with Strahan even apologising to his co-host after making a joke at his expense on another occasion. In that incident, Bradshaw was playfully teased by Curt Menefee during Week 12 coverage, when he joked that his colleague hadn't been asked to sing a country song, unlike country star Carly Pearce who had just released a new Christmas song with Michael Buble.
Bradshaw opened up on the stipulation put forth by the broadcasting team, revealing: "Well, I told them I would, but only with Howie [Long], and that was kind of the deal." Long then playfully insisted America could do with a Christmas album from Bradshaw, but the sporting legend disagreed, prompting Strahan to add: "Can I just say? That was 10 seconds of our lives we can never get back." Bradshaw countered with: "Now Michael, that hurt my feelings."
Strahan promptly offered an apology for his off-the-cuff remark before Menefee swiftly directed the conversation back to the game at hand. Meanwhile, in an interesting twist elsewhere, the dynamics changed as Strahan interrupted Bradshaw while the latter was passionately discussing the trials and tribulations of Steelers icon Russell Wilson.
Compliments were showered on the quarterback, who was touting a respectable 6-2 record at Pittsburgh, amidst recalling his tough previous season which saw him being traded from Seattle Seahawks in 2022, warming the bench for Denver Broncos and eventually getting cut loose in the 2023 offseason.
Bradshaw commented empathetically on Wilson's professional journey, saying: "How would you like to be a quarterback at Seattle and everybody in Seattle wants to get rid of you? And then you get down to Denver and you realise that the head coach doesn't want you."
But Strahan wasn't having it, interrupting Bradshaw and drawing an analogy between Wilson's career transitions and past calls for his own retirement. In an emotional admission, he said: "You said something that set you up. You said that's been happening to you for years. That's a lie because we all want you here. We love you here."
Tensions also flared in December when Bradshaw and Strahan heatedly debated NFL MVPs. Bradshaw confessed feeling slighted for receiving only one MVP award, saying: "I actually should have won it more than I did and I'm a little upset." Quick-witted Strahan shot back: "Well, you know, listen, I was going to say we'll go back, but I don't even know if the kids kept records, but we're going to try to figure something out."
Bradshaw, with a laugh, responded: "That hurts." However, not all interactions between the FOX NFL Sunday stalwarts this term have been contentious; they infamously ribbed Netflix for streaming glitches during vs in November.
Gronkowski attended the event, which saw 60 million households tune in, and the panel noted how he appeared to be "everywhere". Menefee then cut to a clip that was supposed to show Gronkowski's antics at the event, but the clip hilariously froze, with Bradshaw and Strahan sharing a chuckle together at the planned joke.
Bradshaw attracted unwelcome attention in December when he prematurely declared the outcome of an NFL game and botched a player's name. While summarising Game Week 13, Bradshaw incorrectly said "21-0, all 49ers", despite the actual score being 24-0 in favour of San Francisco against the Chicago Bears...and it was only half-time.
The match eventually concluded with the 49ers securing a 38-13 victory. In addition to his scoreboard gaffe, Bradshaw said: "[The] 49ers are hangin' in there, trying to make the playoffs, [this is] a much-needed victory for them." Correcting his colleague live on FOX was Menefee, who interjected: "Well, it's only at half-time, 24-0 though, but yes."
But that wasn't the end of Bradshaw's blunders; he also called UCLA running back Zach Charbonnet, "Zach Cabernet", prompting laughter in the studio but resulting in less amused reactions from viewers at home - some of whom expressed their discontent on social media and suggested it was time for Bradshaw to step down.
One disgruntled viewer lamented online: "Terry Bradshaw just said that the 49ers just got 'a much-needed victory today.' The game is not even at halftime yet. Someone, please take him off the air." This episode wasn't an isolated instance; throughout the season, Bradshaw's errors had sparked repeated discussions about his future in broadcasting.
The presenter suffered an on-air gaffe when he read from the incorrect teleprompter during a half-time segment last October, awkwardly saying amidst coverage of the Buffalo Bills versus Tennessee Titans match: "Nick Chubb is back from his knee injury suffered in week two of last year, but it's Deshaun - whoops, wrong one."
Co-host Menefee was quick to step in and provide the correct information, noting: "This is Amari Cooper for Buffalo getting the touchdown. His Bills debut, Buffalo rolling past Tennessee 34-10 in the final there."
Several U-turnsThroughout December, Bradshaw had to publicly reverse his stance twice. After initially criticising Steelers coach Mike Tomlin for picking Wilson over the popular Justin Fields, who had led the team to a 4-2 start, Bradshaw ultimately acknowledged his error.
He then shared a changed view: "I just marveled at the fact that Tomlin was able to make this move after sitting Justin Fields down. Their record was 4-2, folks. They weren't losing and Fields wasn't playing badly. He just thought Wilson was better suited for their offense and they'd be a bit more explosive. He was exactly right. And you know what? I was wrong. He was right. He knows better than I do."
Bradshaw also made opinion changes regarding the NFL MVP award. Initially, he dismissed Gronkowski's suggestion to consider Lamar Jackson for the accolade, favouring Derrick Henry instead. Yet, not long after, Bradshaw did an about-face, conceding: "You look at Lamar, and I agree, I think Lamar should win it. He's just played outstanding, he's one of those guys that when he plays and you're watching him on television - say they're behind a little? They're not going to be [for long], because you just know he'll bring his team back to victory."
A confusing contradictionIn another twist, Bradshaw had previously caused a stir on FOX NFL Sunday when he retracted harsh criticism of the Chicago Bears' coaching staff following their heavy defeat to the New England Patriots. The game saw quarterback Caleb Williams struggle significantly, only managing 16 completions from 30 attempts for 120 yards, alongside being sacked nine times, leading to a post-match dissection of the Bears' performance with analyst Johnson blaming Williams for the errors.
Bradshaw shared his sharp insights: "But Jimmy, he goes through progressions. All quarterbacks go through three progressions - one, two, three. Gronkowski in New England, a lot of crossing routes up there it just helps him. When you got stationary routes down, turn around, down and out. I mean, really, you're asking him just to sit there and do an awful lot. And it gets confusing, not to mention the fact that he gets very frustrated."
Concluding the discussion, Menefee weighed in: "Well, I think it sounds like both of you are saying coaching has as much to do with this as the play of the quarterback." Only for Bradshaw to instantly retort: "I didn't say that, Curt." Unperturbed, Menefee stood his ground, answering: "Yes, you did, you said it in a lot of words."
Financial offer to Tom BradyAmid a season filled with humorous exchanges among the FOX NFL Sunday panel, Bradshaw couldn't resist making a jestful monetary proposition to the legendary Tom Brady. During warm-up preparations for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' game against the New Orleans Saints in January, Brady engaged in a friendly exchange with former team-mate Gronkowski, asking: "Tom, what's up my brother?"
Brady then shared an amusing exchange about a visit to the restaurant Rocca, teasing his pal Gronkowski: "It was absolutely incredible, I tell you. I loved it. Great job Gronk. I don't know what your involvement is, I don't know if you're setting the menu - but they did say on the way out, 'You still have like an outstanding bill or something you didn't pay', which is kind of crazy.
"And honestly, I didn't want to pick up the tab, I'm a little low on cash these days. I've been spending a lot lately, so sorry about that." The banter drew laughs as Brady received a jovial offer from Bradshaw: "Hey, give me a call. I'll loan you some money. Low on cash, oh my God."
