England's current white-ball captain Jos Buttler is mulling his captaincy after a string of poor performances by the team.

The latest was an eight-run defeat against Afghanistan in the Champions Trophy on Wednesday night.

This was England's ninth defeat in their last 10 white-ball matches this year.

"It's tough to say, stood here right now, and I don't want to make any emotional statements," Buttler told Sky Sports.

Buttler's first stint as captain saw England clinch the 2022 T20 World Cup.

However, the team has struggled since then with six losses out of nine games at the 2023 ODI World Cup and a crushing defeat by India in last year's T20 World Cup semi-finals.

The recent Champions Trophy exit came after consecutive losses to Australia and Afghanistan.

These results have led to speculation about Buttler's future as captain.

Buttler admitted he had feared for his job after Matthew Mott was sacked as England's coach after last year's T20 World Cup.

Despite leading the team through a challenging tour of India where they won just once in eight games, Buttler is still unsure about his future as captain.

"I've enjoyed it [the captaincy]. I've seen lots of people say it doesn't sit well with me, but I do enjoy it," he said.

However, Buttler also acknowledged the pressure of leading a struggling team.

"I enjoy leading. Even before, when I wasn't captain, I'd like to think of myself as a leader in the team, but results are tough and they weigh heavy at times," he said.

Nevertheless, he remains focused on the positives despite the constant speculation over his future as England's white-ball captain.

Future prospects

England's next white-ball fixtures are against the West Indies in June, following their game against South Africa on Saturday.

Harry Brook, who led England in an ODI series against Australia last September and is the vice-captain at the Champions Trophy, could be a potential successor.

Liam Livingstone (ODI) and Phil Salt (T20I) have also filled in for Buttler in the past.
