Lenovo is planning to start manufacturing AI-competent Personal Computer (AI PCS) in India soon. This decision is an important step towards strengthening the supply chain in India and increasing the production capacity.
Ivan Cheng, Vice President and Chief of the Asia Pacific of Lenovo, said in an interview to Indianexpress.com,
“The scheme is currently in the initial stage, but we must first follow local government policies. Our first focus will be on fulfilling India's demand, after that we will increase production capacity. ”
Lenovo already manufactures some commercial pcs at its plant in Puducherry. Apart from this, Motorola smartphones are also made through Dixon Technologies in India. Now the company is planning to produce advanced AI PCS in India and is ready to take advantage of the Government of India's production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme.
Lenovo will not only produce for the Indian market, but also plans to develop India as a global manufacturing hub.
The company has already made India a part of the global supply chain in smartphone manufacturing, from where North America is exported.
Now, the same strategy will be adopted for PCS, which will further strengthen India's manufacturing sector.
AI PCs are different from traditional computers, as they have additional processor, which intensifies the functions associated with artificial intelligence.
These documents make tasks like searching, automatic photo editing and language translation easier.
Legendary tech companies like Intel, Microsoft, AMD and Qualcomm are promoting AI PCS fast.
According to IDC (International Data Corporation), by 2028, 92% of computers worldwide will be AI PCS.
Lenovo is among the top-3 PC manufacturers in India.
In 2023, India's PC market rose by 3.8% and a shipment of 14.4 million units.
The Government of India is promoting local manufacturing under Make in India and 200+ manufacturing plants are already working in the country.
Due to increasing instability from China and new tariffs imposed by the US, companies are considering India as an alternative hub.
According to Lenovo, India can become the largest growth engine for the company in the coming 1-2 years.
“Looking at India's economy and the pace of adopting technology, it is an important market for our development,” said Cheng.
Lenovo's new strategy in the AI PC segment can prove to be another major step towards making India a global manufacturing hub.
