Following the lifting of Mahadeepa atop the Lingaraj temple in Bhubaneswar on Wednesday night in honor of Mahashivratri, devotees broke their fasts.

The 61-foot-tall Shivlinga at the Sri Kaleeswari Thirukkoil temple at Thiruverumbur was given a magnificent ‘Abhishekam’ on the festival of Maha Shivaratri in Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu.
The great night of Shiva, or Maha Shivaratri, is regarded as fortunate for spiritual development and represents the triumph of knowledge and darkness. Additionally, it commemorates the celestial union of Lord Shiva, the demon of destruction, and Goddess Parvati, also called Shakti (power), the goddess of fertility, love, and beauty.
Hindu mythology states that a variety of Hindu gods, goddesses, animals, and demons led Lord Shiva to Goddess Parvati’s home on the day of their wedding. The Shiva-Shakti pair is seen as the embodiment of strength, love, and unity. All around India, people celebrate Maha Shivratri, the festival commemorating their holy union, with a great deal of fervor and devotion.
