Vietnam is working with Thai authorities to verify information about Vietnamese vessels being seized following collision with a Thai naval vessel.
Spokeswoman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Pham Thu Hang on Thursday said Vietnam has yet to receive official information from Thailand about the incident, adding that Vietnam would work with Thai authorities to verify information and deploy citizen protection measures if necessary.
She was responding to inquiries about a Vietnamese fishing vessel being seized after colliding with a Thai naval vessel off the coasts of Thailand’s Trat Province. Four crew members on the Vietnamese vessels were also reportedly detained.
The Vietnamese vessel had allegedly collided with the HTMS Thepa patrol vessel of the Thai navy, the Bangkok Post reported on Wednesday.
Arpa Chapanon, director of the Thai Maritime Enforcement Command Center Region 1, said the collision happened after sailors on the Thepa vessels fired warning shots towards the Vietnamese fishing vessel. The vessel, along with its crew members, will be handed over to the police of Khlong Yai Town, he added.
