Indias fair trade regulator the Competition Commission of India (CCI) has granted approval for Tata Sons to acquire an additional 10% stake in Tata Play from Singapores sovereign wealth fund Temasek Holdings. With this acquisition Tata Sons the promoter of the Tata Group will increase its ownership in Tata Play from 60% to 70%. “The proposed combination involves the acquisition of 10% shareholding in Tata Play by Tata Sons” stated the CCI in an official release. Tata Sons Investment In Tata Play Tata Sons is an investment holding company which is registered as a core investment company with the Reserve Bank of India and classified as a Systemically Important Non-Deposit Taking Core Investment Company. Commission approves the acquisition of certain additional shareholding in Tata Play Ltd by Tata Sons Pvt Ltd from Baytree Investments (Mauritius) Pte Ltd the regulator said. Baytree Investments (Mauritius) is an affiliate of Singapores sovereign wealth fund Temasek Holdings. Tata Play (formerly Tata Sky) is one of Indias leading content distribution platforms providing Pay TV and over-the-top (OTT) services through Tata Play Binge an OTT platform. Deals beyond a certain threshold require approval from the regulator which keeps a tab on unfair business practices and promotes fair competition in the marketplace.  Tata Play-Airtel Digital TV Potential Merger  According to media reports including The Economic Times Tata Play and Airtel Digital TV are in advanced discussions to merge their satellite television businesses. If finalized the merger would result in a combined entity valued at approximately $1.6 billion. This strategic move is aimed at addressing the growing trend of customers shifting to digital streaming services. As of September last year Tata Play and Airtel Digital TV collectively served over 35 million paid subscribers accounting for more than 50% of Indias 60 million DTH subscriber base.
