Amitabh Bachchan and Dharmendra starrer Sholay is till date considered a cult classic in Hindi cinema. The film made several records which is one of selling the highest number of tickets when released. However this 1971 film broke its record upon its release in China emerging as a roaring success. A small film with modest budget Caravan starred Jeetendra and Asha Parekh in the lead roles. Directed by Nasir Hussain the film was declared superhit in India earning Rs 3.6 crore at the box office. But it became a legacy when released in China selling 8.8 crore tickets becoming the highest-grossing Indian film in a foreign country until then. The craze for Caravan was extreme and it was released multiple times in China. In fact the total footfalls rose to 30 crore the highest for any Indian film in a single country. In fact it broke Sholays record in India and Awaras record in Soviet Union. In fact Dangal which is considered the biggest Indian hit overseas courtesy to its $238 million collection from China alone couldnt break the record of Caravan. The Aamir Khan starrer sold 4.31 crore tickets just one-seventh of what Caravan managed. Similarly SS Rajamoulis RRR made history in the US and Japan collecting nearly $20 million from these two territories. Also Allu Arjuns Pushpa 2 the biggest Indian film of 2024 sold 6 crore tickets and made an estimated Rs 1 crore overseas. Neither could manage to attain what Caravan achieved. According to reports Caravan sold staggering 8.8 crore tickets in China and 1.9 crore tickets in India when released. A report published in 2000 claimed that the ticket sales for Caravan had exceeded 30 crore Following the release actress Asha Parekh became an overnight sensation and starred in superhit films like Jab Pyar Kisi Se Hota Hai Bharosa Ziddi Mere Sanam Teesri Manzil and Love in Tokyo. Caravan was a crime thriller inspired by Girl on the Run (1953). The film is till date remembered for its chartbuster songs - Chadhti Jawani Piya Tu Ab To Aa Ja Dilbar Dil Se Pyare and Kitna Pyara Wada.
