Images posted on social media by the competition’s official account show contestants shirtless, adorned with smooth body paint and gold leaf accents.

The distinct visual style quickly spread across forums and social platforms, drawing widespread attention.

Many netizens from Hong Kong expressed surprise at the contestants’ appearance, with some describing the look as “surprisingly unconventional.” Others commented on the natural physiques on display, comparing the aesthetic to international pageant standards.

Despite the criticism, several users voiced support for the Cambodian contestants, noting cultural differences and welcoming broader definitions of beauty.

The Miss and Mister Majestic Cambodia 2025 competition, currently underway in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, is set to select the nation’s representative for next year’s Mister Global contest. Contestants are being judged in categories including physique, catwalk, and traditional costume. Last year’s winner was model Nawin, who stands 1.83 meters tall.

Among this year’s finalists, Lai Thai has become a standout figure online. His photos have been widely shared, sparking both praise and criticism. In response to the backlash, Lai Thai remained confident.

“Many believe beauty pageants are only for those who are conventionally attractive, but I’m here to represent everyone. Your background or appearance shouldn’t define you,” he said. “What truly matters is embracing who you are and putting in the effort to show your worth. Winning isn’t everything.”
