Legendary Bollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan has shared his thoughts on the surprising popularity of his 1999 film Sooryavansham. Despite not doing well when it was first released in theatres, the film has become one of his most-watched movies on television and is now considered a cult classic.
In a recent interview, Bachchan admitted that he doesn’t fully understand why the film became so loved over time. He said, “The film was not well received when it was released. But over the years, it has become one of my most viewed films. If we knew what makes a film work, we’d only be making blockbusters.”
He also remembered his co-star Soundarya, who tragically passed away in a plane crash in 2004. Speaking about her, he said, “She went so suddenly. One day there, the next day… Life! She was so young and beautiful. So full of life. Why would she go so suddenly?”
Sooryavansham, where Bachchan plays a double role, has become famous for its regular reruns on television and has even become a part of internet culture, with its scenes and dialogues often shared as memes.
Bachchan’s reflections show how unpredictable film success can be and how certain stories find their audience in unexpected ways over time.
