New Delhi: Fast bowler Avesh Khan kept his composure in the final overs to guide Lucknow Super Giants to a nail-biting two-run triumph over Rajasthan Royals in their IPL clash on Saturday.
With Rajasthan comfortably placed at 156 for 2 after 17 overs — needing just 25 runs from the final three overs with eight wickets still intact — Khan turned the game on its head. He gave away only five runs in the 18th over and picked up the key wickets of Riyan Parag and Yashasvi Jaiswal.
Tasked with defending nine runs in the last over Avesh delivered under pressure removing Shimron Hetmyer (12) and conceding just six runs to seal a dramatic win for LSG. Rajasthan Royals fell short at 178 for 5 in their 20 overs chasing a target of 181.
It was a crushing blow for the Royals who let victory slip through their fingers despite being in control marking their fourth consecutive loss and sixth in eight outings this season.
While chasing the target Yashasvi Jaiswal (74 off 52) kept his purple patch going with a fluent half-century and 14-year-old debutant Vaibhav Suryavanshi (34 off 20) made a remarkable start to his IPL journey. The young left-handed pair added 85 runs in just 8.4 overs giving Rajasthan a flying start.
Jaiswal played the sheet anchor role smashing five boundaries and clearing the ropes four times in his impressive innings.
Rajasthan Royals got off to a dream start in their chase with Vaibhav Suryavanshi entering as the Impact Player alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal drawing loud cheers from the home crowd at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium.
Just 14 years and 23 days old Suryavanshi made an unforgettable entry into the IPL smashing Shardul Thakur for a six over extra cover off his very first delivery—becoming only the 10th player ever to achieve such a feat.
He followed it up with another maximum off Avesh Khan in the next over showcasing his fearless approach. However fortune favoured him when Ravi Bishnoi put down a chance while he was on 14.
His senior partner Jaiswal nine years elder then unleashed a flurry of shots smashing a six and a four off Thakur and adding two towering sixes off Aiden Markram. Another big hit from Jaiswal brought up a flying start as RR raced to 61 without loss at the end of the powerplay.
Rajasthan Royals looked in complete control cruising at a run rate of 10 per over until Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s vibrant knock of 34 from 20 balls was brought to an end.
The 14-year-old prodigy was deceived by a clever slower ball from Aiden Markram and Rishabh Pant whipped off the bails to complete a sharp stumping. Though Suryavanshi opted for a DRS review it didn’t go his way and he walked off visibly disappointed after an impressive debut display.
Nitish Rana who had notched up a fifty in the previous outing couldn’t replicate the same form. He fell on the final ball of the 10th over managing just 8 from 7 deliveries.
At the halfway point the Royals were sitting comfortably at 94 for 2 with Jaiswal anchoring the innings beautifully.
Needing only 25 runs from the last 18 balls Avesh Khan delivered a stunning 18th over that shifted the momentum. He bowled Jaiswal with a pinpoint yorker off the first ball and then trapped Riyan Parag leg-before with another toe-crusher on the last.
Earlier in the evening solid fifties from Aiden Markram and Ayush Badoni helped Lucknow Super Giants recover from early setbacks and post a challenging 180/5.
Aiden Markram (66 off 45) and Ayush Badoni (50 off 34) combined for a crucial 76-run partnership for the fourth wicket stabilizing the Lucknow Super Giants’ innings after they had stumbled to 54 for 3 by the eighth over.
Skipper Rishabh Pants call to bat first after winning the toss initially seemed questionable but Markram and Badoni brought the visitors back on track with a composed and well-paced stand.
Late in the innings Abdul Samad provided fireworks with a blistering unbeaten 30 off just 10 deliveries cracking six boundaries in the final over bowled by Sandeep Sharma.
Among the Rajasthan Royals bowlers Wanindu Hasaranga was the pick returning figures of 2 for 31. Jofra Archer Tushar Deshpande and Sandeep Sharma chipped in with a wicket each.
Archer though struck for two boundaries by Markram in his opening over made a strong comeback by removing the dangerous Mitchell Marsh (4) in his second thanks to a sharp catch by Shimron Hetmyer after Marsh nicked one behind.
While Aiden Markram continued to anchor the innings at one end Lucknow Super Giants kept losing wickets at the other. Nicholas Pooran their top scorer in the tournament so far was trapped leg-before by Sandeep Sharma for 11 after being deceived by a slower ball to which he committed too early.
LSG reached 46/2 by the end of the powerplay but trouble brewed in the eighth over as skipper Rishabh Pant fresh off a superb 63 against CSK was dismissed for just 3. The left-hander mistimed a delivery from Wanindu Hasaranga that kicked up unexpectedly resulting in a simple catch for keeper Dhruv Jurel.
Markram provided some relief with back-to-back sixes in the 10th over helping Lucknow move to 76/3 at the halfway point.
