‘Sakhi Niwas’ (women’s shelters) are being established in nine main districts by the Uttar Pradesh government as part of the Mission Shakti initiative to improve women’s safety, dignity, and empowerment. These shelters, which may accommodate up to 50 people each, will provide safety to women who are struggling with familial, legal, or societal issues.
The project seeks to provide women who lack protection with a secure and encouraging atmosphere. Lucknow, Varanasi, Prayagraj, Gorakhpur, Agra, Bareilly, Meerut, Ghaziabad, and Gautam Buddh Nagar will all have shelters.
These districts were chosen on the basis of urbanization, population, and the quantity of instances involving women. The ‘Sakhi Niwas’ facilities, which are funded by a 60:40 collaboration between the federal and state governments, will provide free temporary lodging, food, clothes, and healthcare.
To help people reintegrate into society and gain economic empowerment, residents will get basic requirements, counseling, legal assistance, and skill development training in areas including sewing, computers, beauty salon services, and handicrafts.
The state’s support network for women is further strengthened by this effort, which expands on already existing Mission Shakti services, including One Stop Centers, Women’s Helpline, and Police Help Desks.
