However, after the race in Jeddah, Piastri revealed he had been confused by a flashing red light on a building situated close to the track.

"I saw it on lap four or five and I actually thought it was a red flag," he explained. "So I backed off about a tenth of a second. But then I saw it again later in the race and thought, 'this is annoying'."

Piastri, 24, overcame the confusion and finished 2.8 seconds ahead of rival Verstappen, while Norris could only claim fourth place after his turbulent weekend. However, the Aussie has now urged the authorities to sort out the issue before the 2026 race in Saudi Arabia.

He added: "If we can get rid of it (the light), it'd be good. I think it's on one of the local buildings or something. Maybe next year, they can do something about it. It was a little bit of a distraction, but there we are."

Piastri and co did have one genuine red flag to deal with early on. That followed a crash between and Pierre Gasly, but the post-race talk was dominated by from Piastri by going off the track at the first corner.

On the incident, Piastri said: "Once I got on the inside I wasn't coming out of Turn One in second. I tried my best and obviously the stewards had to get involved.

"I thought I was far enough and in the end that's what got me the race. I'm very happy with all the work we've been doing on the starts and that's what won the race for us today."
