I know sweet potatoes are high in starch and keep me feeling full longer. Can I eat them daily instead of rice? (Hoa, 22, Hanoi)
Answer:
Sweet potatoes contain about 25% starch and only 0.1% fat. They are nutrient-rich, packed with vitamins and minerals, and generally beneficial for health.
Eating boiled sweet potatoes can help relieve constipation because they act as a mild laxative. Naturally sweet, they nourish the body, boost energy, strengthen kidney function, help prevent colds, support weight loss, provide antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits, and may protect against various illnesses.

However, sweet potatoes contain high amounts of fiber, potassium, and vitamin A. People with kidney disease, whose bodies cannot efficiently remove excess potassium, should avoid large portions.
Those with digestive issues may also experience increased stomach acid, heartburn, and gas if they consume too many sweet potatoes. Eating sweet potatoes in the evening can trigger acid reflux, especially among people with sensitive stomachs or older adults whose digestion is slower, making them prone to bloating. Therefore, sweet potatoes cannot fully replace rice.
Sweet potatoes provide roughly the same carbohydrate content as rice. If you eat sweet potatoes throughout the day, you should reduce your rice intake accordingly to avoid excessive starch. If you’re already eating rice, limit your sweet potato intake to about 100–200 grams.
For healthy weight loss, focus on controlling overall calorie intake, balancing nutrients, and maintaining regular physical activity. Additionally, drink sufficient water and only snack when advised by a healthcare professional.
