Earth Day 2025: Every year 22 April is celebrated as 'World Earth Day' or 'International Mother Earth Day' all over the world. This day is particularly celebrated for the purpose of spreading environmental balance, protecting the earth and public awareness about climate change. This year the theme of Earth Day is 'Our Shakti, Our Planet' (Our Power, Our Planet). It underlines the importance of collective efforts towards environmental protection.
The relevance of Earth Day has increased even more in this era of climate crisis. This day not only throws light on environmental challenges, but also inspires the common people for positive changes. This movement, which has started small, has become a strong platform on a global level today, which resolves every person to do something for the earth.
Earth Day began in 1970, when it emerged as a modern environmental movement. At that time the people of America were not aware of environmental issues. But in 1962, the publication of Rechhel Carson's book Silent Spring created a stir in the public. This book used to highlight the deep relations of creatures, environment and pollution and public health.
After this, American senator Gay Lord Nelson, affected by a major oil leakage in California in January 1969, planned to organize 'Teach-in' in colleges. He tried to connect environmental awareness with student movements and made Republican MP Pete McCluski his co-chairman.
Earth Day was celebrated for the first time on 22 April 1970, in which around 2 crore American citizens participated. On this day, people gathered in roads, parks and auditoriums and voiced against the ill effects of 150 years of industrial progress, which damaged both human health and nature. This movement was not only successful in attracting the attention of the national media, but also played an important role in the creation of many environmental policies.
At present, when climate change, lack of natural resources and pollution problems are becoming serious, the importance of Earth Day has increased even more. This day works to make us aware and inspires that we do something for our earth whether it is to plant trees, use less plastic or support clean energy.
This year, the theme of Earth Day is 'our power, our planet'. This theme emphasizes that the power of real change lies in the general public. This year is also the 55th anniversary of this movement, in which people from all over the world will unite and work for the environment.
