After this, American senator Gay Lord Nelson, affected by a major oil leakage in California in January 1969, planned to organize 'Teach-in' in colleges. He tried to connect environmental awareness with student movements and made Republican MP Pete McCluski his co-chairman.
Earth Day was celebrated for the first time on 22 April 1970, in which around 2 crore American citizens participated.
