Pope Francis, the head of the Roman Catholic Church and one of the most influential religious figures of our time, has passed away at the age of 88, the Vatican officially announced.

Just hours ago, the Pope made a frail but hopeful appearance at St. Peter’s Square on Easter Sunday, offering blessings from his wheelchair to thousands of faithful gathered below. Though his traditional “Urbi et Orbi” Easter message was read by a clergy member, Pope Francis waved to the crowd and smiled as he was driven around the square, pausing to bless children.

His Easter address echoed his consistent advocacy for peace, tolerance, and human dignity, particularly highlighting the suffering in conflict zones like Gaza. “There can be no peace without freedom of religion, freedom of thought, freedom of expression and respect for the views of others,” he had said, visibly moved.

Pope Francis had been discharged from the hospital just a month ago after battling a severe infection that led to double pneumonia. Despite his deteriorating health, he continued to fulfil his duties with unwavering spirit until his final days.

More details on the funeral arrangements and global reactions are expected shortly.
