Lazio were furious upon learning that their league game against Genoa had been officially postponed to Wednesday, criticizing the ‘communication and management’ of the decision by Lega Serie A as ‘approximate and disrespectful.’

The Biancocelesti’s away trip to the Stadio Luigi Ferraris, originally scheduled for Monday, April 21, was among the fixtures postponed following the death of Pope Francis on the same day.

However, Lega Serie A’s decision to announce the rescheduling of those games on Wednesday afternoon, with an official statement issued only a few hours after the initial postponement and without any prior contact with the clubs involved, sparked frustration from Lazio president Claudio Lotito.

Lotito had hoped to reschedule his side’s game for another day, with the intention of allowing the team to visit Vatican City and pay their respects to Pope Francis’ remains on Wednesday.

Why Lazio are furious with Lega Serie A over the Genoa postponement

After Lega Serie A officially confirmed that the Easter Monday fixtures would be moved to Wednesday as suggested, Lazio sharply criticised the league’s choice and behaviour in an official statement, which was reported by multiple outlets, Including La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“Lazio express their deep regret regarding the manner in which Lega Serie A handled the decision to reschedule the Biancocelesti’s match at Genoa,” it reads.

“The club considers the communication and management of this decision to be approximate and disrespectful, with its inefficiency clearly evident and widely noticeable, not only from a logistical point of view but especially in light of the emotional and spiritual significance that this extraordinary event holds for our city and what the Club represents.

“Lazio can’t help but highlight the unprofessional and wavering attitude shown by Lega Serie A in the uneven handling of the rescheduling of matches.

“This lack of consistency has caused confusion and fueled a sense of disparity between the various clubs involved, further aggravating an already delicate situation.

“Nevertheless, out of a sense of responsibility and to avoid further controversy in a moment of national grief, S.S. Lazio announce that the team will exceptionally travel to Genoa on the same day as the match.

“The trip will take place just a few hours before the start of the game.”
