Delhi Capitals defeated Lucknow Super Giants by eight wickets with half-centuries from KL Rahul and Abhishek Porel. Lucknow scored 159 runs for six wickets in 20 overs based on Aiden Markram's half-century in the match played at the Ekana Stadium, in response, Delhi won the game by scoring 161 runs for two wickets in 17.5 overs. This is Delhi's sixth win in eight matches. This is the fifth time Delhi has won six out of the first eight matches in a season.
Status of the points table
Before IPL 2025, Delhi had also won six out of the first eight matches in the 2009, 2012, 2020, and 2021 seasons. The interesting thing is that whenever Delhi has done so, it has been successful in reaching the playoffs. With this win, Delhi has 12 points and is second in the points table after Gujarat Titans. Delhi and Gujarat have the same points, but the Titans remain on top based on net run rate. On the other hand, Lucknow has 10 points with five wins and four losses in nine matches and is fifth in the table.
Rahul surpassed Warner
KL Rahul also completed 5000 runs in IPL with this. He has become the batsman to do so in the least number of innings. Rahul completed this feat in 130 innings and left behind David Warner. Warner had completed 5000 runs in IPL in 135 innings. Virat Kohli is in third place on this list who achieved this feat in 157 innings, while AB de Villiers with 161 and Shikhar Dhawan are in fourth and fifth place respectively with 168 innings.
Rahul-Porel partnership
Chasing the target, Delhi got the first blow in the form of Karun Nair who was dismissed after scoring 15 runs off nine balls with the help of two fours and a six. After this, Rahul and Porel took Delhi's innings forward and added 69 runs for the second wicket. During this, Porel hit his first half-century of this season. However, after hitting a fifty, he could not stay at the crease for long and Markram got him caught by David Miller and sent him to the pavilion. Porel played an innings of 51 runs with the help of five fours and a six in 36 balls.
Won the match by hitting a six
After the partnership with Porel broke, captain Akshar Patel came to the crease and he played a partnership with Rahul. Rahul and Akshar changed gears and started playing fast. Rahul completed his half-century in 40 balls and then gave the team victory by hitting a six off Prince Yadav. For Delhi, Rahul scored an unbeaten 57 runs with the help of three fours and three sixes in 42 balls, while Akshar Patel returned unbeaten after scoring 34 runs with the help of one four and four sixes in 20 balls. There was an unbeaten partnership of 56 runs for the third wicket between Rahul and Akshar. Markram got both the wickets for Lucknow. In this way, Delhi won both its matches against Lucknow this season.
Lucknow Super Giants' innings
Earlier, Delhi won the toss in this match and decided to bowl first, but Aiden Markram and Mitchell Marsh made a great partnership for the first wicket for Lucknow. After the break of this partnership, Lucknow's innings faltered. For Lucknow, Markram scored the highest 52 runs with the help of two fours and three sixes in 33 balls, while Marsh scored 45 runs with the help of three fours and a six in 36 balls.
Marsh-Markram gave a great start.
Batting first, Marsh and Markram gave Lucknow a strong start and added 87 runs for the first wicket. Markram completed his half-century in 30 balls, which is his fourth fifty this season. Dushmantha Chameera, however, broke this partnership by dismissing Markram. As soon as Markram was out, Lucknow's innings faltered and it lost four wickets in a span of 23 runs. After Markram was out, Mitchell Starc dismissed Nicholas Pooran who was dismissed after scoring nine runs.
After this, Mukesh Kumar dismissed Abdul Samad who scored two runs. Mitchell Marsh, who was batting well, also became the victim of Mukesh Kumar. Then Ayush Badoni, who came in as an impact player, shared a 49-run partnership for the fifth wicket with David Miller, but Mukesh Kumar bowled Badoni. Badoni was dismissed after scoring 36 runs off 21 balls with the help of six fours. The interesting thing was that captain Rishabh Pant came out to bat at number seven when there were two balls left for Lucknow's innings to end.
Pant may have come out to play two balls in this match, but could not even open the account and was bowled by Mukesh on the last ball of the innings. Mukesh Kumar bowled brilliantly for Delhi and took four wickets, while Starc and Chameera got one wicket each. Kuldeep Yadav could not get a single success in this match. This is the first time this season that Kuldeep remained empty-handed
