RBI’s New Rule for Banks: Website Addresses to Change by October, Online Fraud Prevention Boosted

Important update for all bank customers! The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has taken a crucial step toward enhancing digital banking safety. To curb rising cases of online fraud and phishing, the RBI has instructed all banks to shift their official websites to the new ‘.bank.in’ domain by October 31, 2025.

This move is aimed at strengthening cybersecurity, boosting public trust in digital services, and ensuring that customers access only authentic and verified banking websites.

🔐 What’s Changing?

Till now, many banks operated their websites with extensions like “.com” or “.in”, but now, to create a secure and identifiable space for banking, the RBI has mandated all banks to adopt the “.bank.in” domain.

This change means that instead of accessing your bank’s site through domains like www.bankname.com or www.bankname.in, you will be redirected to www.bankname.bank.in.

🧑‍💻 Who Will Handle This Transition?

The technical setup and support for this domain migration will be provided by the Institute for Development and Research in Banking Technology (IDRBT). This institution has been authorized by the National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI) and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY).

Banks looking to begin this transition can contact IDRBT at sahyog@idrbt.ac.in.

💡 Why This Change Was Needed

With the rising trend of cyber frauds and phishing scams, users often fall prey to fake or cloned banking websites. The ‘.bank.in’ domain will act as a trust signal for users, assuring that the website they’re visiting is officially registered and verified.

The unique and restricted use of ‘.bank.in’ will prevent scammers from creating lookalike websites, reducing the chances of digital thefts.

👥 What This Means for You

  • Always look for the “.bank.in” domain when visiting a bank’s website after October 2025.

  • Expect to see enhanced security features like SSL certification and a green security padlock on your browser.

  • Avoid logging into websites using older ‘.com’ or ‘.in’ domains once your bank updates its portal.

✅ Benefits of the New Domain

  • High-level cybersecurity protection

  • Verified banking portals only

  • Minimized phishing and spoofing risks

  • Easier for customers to identify genuine sites

As India moves ahead in its digital transformation journey, this step by RBI ensures safe and secure banking for all.
