Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) are taking on Mumbai Indians (MI) in Match 41 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad. MI won the toss and opted to bowl first, aiming to apply early pressure on a high-flying MI side that has found consistent form in recent games. As the teams walked onto the field, an unusual silence enveloped the stadium. Players from both sides, along with the match officials, were seen wearing black armbands, a visual that immediately captured attention and hinted at a moment of reflection amidst the high-stakes tournament.

Reason behind SRH and MI wearing black armbands

In a powerful gesture of unity and remembrance, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) paid tribute to the victims of the Pahalgam terror. The nation was left in mourning after the heart-wrenching attack, which claimed the lives of innocent civilians. The incident has deeply shaken the country, prompting strong condemnation from global leaders and widespread sorrow across communities.

To honour the victims and stand in solidarity with the grieving families, players from both teams, along with the umpires, wore black armbands throughout the match. A minute of silence is also expected to be observed before the game commences, creating a somber yet respectful atmosphere inside the stadium. As part of austerity measures, the BCCI also decided to forgo cheerleader performances for the evening, allowing the occasion to maintain a tone of reflection and dignity. Several top Indian cricketers, including Virat Kohli, KL Rahul and Shubman Gill, took to their social media platforms to express their condolences, share their grief, and condemn the act of terror.

Hardik Pandya and Pat Cummins extend support at the toss

In the aftermath of the tragic Pahalgam terror attack, captains from both MI and SRH have spoken out at the toss time, expressing their grief and solidarity with the affected families.

MI captain Hardik Pandya said:

“I would like to firstly extend my heartfelt condolences to the victims and their families. What happened was deeply disturbing. We, as a team and a franchise, strongly condemn any form of violence or terror. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected by this tragedy,”

SRH skipper Pat Cummins, also offered his support, stating:

“It has been heartbreaking for all of us to hear about the attack. Incidents like these go far beyond the cricket field. Our thoughts are firmly with the victims, their families, and everyone grieving at this moment,”
