Renowned cardiac surgeon and Madhuri Dixit’s husband, Dr. Shriram Nene, recently opened up about his transformative health journey that began after a wake-up call during his annual check-up. Known for his work in the medical field both in the U.S. and India, Dr. Nene revealed that he was shocked to discover his health metrics were far from ideal — prompting a dramatic lifestyle overhaul.
Speaking on a panel discussion and in a video shared on his YouTube channel, Dr. Nene recounted the moment he realized it was time for a change. “After my last health check-up, I found I was in big trouble. All my numbers were off — people were literally screaming at me. They said, ‘You’re the healthcare guy in the family — what are you doing?’” he recalled.
Determined to reclaim his health, Dr. Nene made some steep lifestyle changes about 9-10 months ago. He cut out alcohol and transitioned to a completely vegan diet. “We decided to go all in — it was a complete transformation. I became my own guinea pig,” he said.
The results were striking. In less than a year, Dr. Nene lost 18 kilograms and brought his body fat down to 16 percent.
Interestingly, Dr. Nene noted that this transformation was inspired by a similar intervention he had successfully implemented with his father. “My dad had been diabetic for 55 years. We made some key changes in his diet and lifestyle, and were eventually able to take him off his diabetic medication. He was 81 when we started — he’s now 86 and doing incredibly well,” he shared.
Motivated by these results, Dr. Nene decided to apply the same methods to himself. “I thought, why not do it for me too?” he said. And the transformation, both physical and mental, has been remarkable.
Dr. Nene now regularly shares health tips, wellness strategies, and nutrition advice across his social media platforms, encouraging others to take charge of their well-being with informed lifestyle choices.
