Implementation of the much anticipated Buxar-Bhagalpur Expressway project has advanced significantly. The process of choosing an organization to draft the Detailed Project Report (DPR) has been started by the Government of India’s Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.

Instead of being a greenfield project, it has been established that the project would include turning the current road into a four-lane highway. The primary goal, as stated in the RFP, is to turn the current road into a four-lane roadway with paved shoulders.

The planned roadway between Buxar and Bhagalpur is called to as a high-speed corridor or expressway, according to the invitation to bid. DPR development is expected to be over 240 kilometers long. By the end of 2026, the chosen agency will have 270 days to finish the DPR.

Currently, there are around 375 kilometers of road between Buxar and Bhagalpur on average. According to earlier plans, the highway would be around 360 kilometers long. According to the most recent tender, just a section of the current road—possibly omitting the Buxar-Patna stretch—will be constructed.

Not an access-controlled expressway, but a four-lane highway, the Buxar–Koilwar–Bihta segment was recently improved. Construction is already underway on the elevated four-lane roadway that will connect Bihta and Patna. If the government decides to turn the whole line into an expressway, then land purchase will be required. An expressway’s typical road width is 90 meters.

The deadline for interested organizations to submit bids is June 16; the offer was issued on April 22. Prior to the elections for the Bihar Assembly, the agency selection is anticipated. Project execution is under the purview of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).

According to the tender announcement, a number of the current NH sections between Buxar and Bhagalpur would be merged and given new names. This covers NH 31 from Patna to Munger, NH 33 from Munger to Bhagalpur, and NH 922 from Buxar to Patna. With the exception of a 78.5-kilometer section of NH 31 from Mokama to Munger, all highways are already four-lane.
