Tensions Rise Amid Diplomatic Strain

A video circulating on social media has captured attention, depicting a staff member from the Pakistan High Commission receiving a cake. Surrounded by reporters, the individual chose not to respond to any inquiries. In a related development, security measures outside the Pakistani High Commission have been lifted.

In light of the tragic terror incident that occurred on April 22 in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, India has initiated significant diplomatic actions aimed at holding Pakistan accountable for its involvement in cross-border terrorism.

Acknowledging the gravity of the situation and its international implications, the Cabinet Committee on Security has implemented several unprecedented actions:

  • Suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty

  • Closure of the Attari Integrated Check Post

  • Cancellation of the SAARC Visa Exemption Scheme for Pakistani citizens

  • Designation of Pakistani diplomats as persona non grata

In addition, India has declared the withdrawal of its Defence, Navy, and Air Advisors from the Indian High Commission located in Islamabad, effectively nullifying all such roles. Furthermore, five support staff members associated with these advisors will also be withdrawn from both High Commissions.

India has made the decision to decrease the overall personnel count at both the Indian High Commission in Islamabad and the Pakistani High Commission in New Delhi. The staff strength will be reduced to 30 from the current 55, with this change set to take effect by May 1, 2025.
