New Zealand Cricket Partners with MLC Franchise in Strategic U.S. Expansion:
News Update April 24, 2025 10:28 PM

New Zealand Cricket (NZC) has strategically partnered with a new franchise of the Major League Cricket (MLC) which is set to begin operating in 2027. The franchise is sponsored by True North Sports Ventures, under the ownership of MLC co-founders Sameer Mehta and Vijay Srinivasan. The investment group also includes the investment branch of the San Francisco 49ers as a minority stakeholder.

This marks the first time a national cricket board has unilaterally sponsored, operationally managed, and invested in a competing foreign league. NZC will take up a minority stake and assume operational control over cricketing activities, players’ and coaches’ development, talent nurturing, and high-performance management for the franchise.

Franchise Tactics Regarding Integration into Cricket

The contract allows NZC to overlay its domestic structure, militarize its contracted coaches and players, and employ its competencies to increase MLC’s cricketing talent. It is understood that Scott Weenink made comments regarding the offset of the mutual benefit from the board being able to receive payments from the services and equity they are offering, framing this particular venture as intended to spearhead surplus revenue in the long run.

Cricbuzz cites NLZ has the prerogative of deepening the equity stake in the future, for whom the role would evolve from a service provider to a substantial minority shareholder.

Building the Franchise: Insights from NZC and the 49ers

As per Mehta, the initial participation of NZC brings the franchise early enough to stage the implementation of a balanced performance framework within an existing structure. Further, he pointed out how NZC is adept at performance optimization which is a provided advantage in the U.S. cricketing landscape.

Merchandising and venue management turned commercial as well provided value for the San Francisco 49ers and their comprehensive involvement, ensuring that there was holistic growth of the franchise with regards to external relations and collaborations.

Responding to Economic Strains while Sustaining Revenue Growth

With NZC moving to MLC, it indicates that they are trying to diversify the sources of revenue, especially due to the petite size of the market in New Zealand and the restrictions on broadcasting Super Smash’s domestic leagues. Weenink accepted it is hard to make money from domestic cricket but was optimistic in the financial returns from being part of the MLC.

Possible New Franchise Location and Vision For The Future

Discussions with Cricket Canada and local officials from Brampton have commenced towards setting up the new MLC franchise which is projected to be located in Toronto, with Atlanta remaining as a backup option. This shift highlights the agility of NZC in shifting towards strengthening sustainable growth outside their traditional markets.
