Aakhri Khat emerged as a cult classic and was selected as the Indian entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 40th Academy Awards in 1967 but was not nominated. Although it did not receive a nomination the movie was much talked about in that era. Later it was also remade in Tamil Telugu and Turkish. The Tamil remake Poonthalir was released in 1979 and the Telugu remake Chinnari Chitti Babu in 1981. In 1974 the film was also remade in Turkey under the title Garip Kus.
