Punjab is on alert mode after the Pahalgam terror attack. CM Mann has approved the recruitment of 5500 Home Guards to further strengthen the state's border security. According to the official statement issued by the government, this decision has been taken in a high-level meeting chaired by the CM.

CM Bhagwantmann said that the Chief Minister said that these 5,500 jawans of the border branch of the Punjab Home Guard will be deployed in seven border districts of the state to strengthen the security system. He also made it clear that a "second line of defense" will be created behind the Border Security Force (BSF) to prevent terrorist activities, which will stop infiltrators from the international border.

Need for central government assistance.
Mann said that the state government will need the assistance of the central government to implement this large-scale security system and for this, he will soon meet the Union Home Minister. The Chief Minister also informed that Punjab has adequate manpower, courage, and resources to carry out this task, and additional assistance will be taken from the Center if required.

More than 400 new soldiers will be recruited.

CM Bhagwant Mann also announced the recruitment of more than 400 new soldiers across the state. These soldiers will be deployed in the Road Safety Force and State Disaster Force.

Why are home guards needed in Punjab?

Home guards are needed in Punjab because a large part of Punjab shares its border with Pakistan, from where many incidents of infiltration, smuggling of weapons, and supply of narcotics have come to light. In such a situation, home guards can work in the second line after the BSF. This has become even more important after the Pahalgam terror attack.
