UP Board Exam Passing Rules
The Uttar Pradesh Board of Secondary Education has set certain criteria for the UP Board Result 2025.
Minimum Marks: It is mandatory to secure at least 33% marks (33 out of 100) in each subject.
Subject-wise pass: 33% marks are required to pass in all subjects (usually 5 or 6). There is no minimum aggregate percentage requirement, but passing in each subject is a must.
Practical subjects: In subjects which have practical exams (such as Physics, Chemistry, Biology), a minimum of 33% marks in theory and practical combined is required.
Grace Marks: If a student scores slightly less than 33 marks (such as 28-32) in a subject, then the UP Board may award grace marks (maximum 5 marks per subject) in some cases. It depends on the discretion and rules of the board.
Example:
Suppose, you have 5 subjects (each of 100 marks):
Hindi: 35/100 (pass)
English: 40/100 (pass)
Maths: 25/100 (fail)
Physics: 38/100 (pass)
Chemistry: 50/100 (pass)
In this case, you will fail in Mathematics, then you can pass by taking a compartment exam.
What to do if you fail in UP Board Exam 2025?
There is no need to panic even if you fail in one or more subjects in UP Board 10th, 12th Exam 2025. You can explore the options written below:
1- UP Board Compartment Exam
If a student fails in one or two subjects, then he can take the UP Board Compartment Exam. Through this, you can pass those subjects. UP Board Compartment Exam is usually held in July 2025. The exact date will be announced on the UP Board website (upmsp.edu.in).
Application Process:
After the result, the compartment exam form will be available on the school or UP Board website. Fill out the form, pay the required fee (fee information will be available on the board's website), and download the admit card.
How to prepare for UP Board compartment exam
Focus on weak subjects. Use NCERT books, previous years' question papers,, and online resources (like YouTube tutorials, Unacademy). If necessary, join tuition or coaching. Along with this, increase your confidence and check your preparation by giving mock tests.
Result: On passing the compartment exam, you will get a new mark sheet and then you can apply for higher education or job.
2. Apply for scrutiny
If you feel that the marks have been given wrongly in any subject or there is a mistake in evaluation, then you can apply for scrutiny (re-evaluation).
Application Process
The scrutiny form will be available on the UP Board website (upmsp.edu.in) after the result declaration (April 25, 2025). Submit the fee per subject (around Rs 100-500, as per the board notification). The answer sheet will be re-checked and then the board will declare the new marks.
Note: The marks may increase decrease or remain the same in scrutiny. If you are close to 33 marks (eg 30-32) then scrutiny may be useful.
Timeline: Application for scrutiny has to be made within 15-20 days of the result declaration.
3. Re-examination (if failed in all subjects)
If you fail in three or more subjects, then the option of compartment examination will not be available. You will have to take the entire exam again next year i.e. 2026.
What to do about this?
Take admission to school again or fill out the form as a private candidate. Work on weak areas. Take help from tuition, online courses or study groups. Focus on NCERT books and previous years' question papers.
Tip: During this time, take admission in a skill-based course (like digital marketing, tally, or computer). This will save time from wasting.
