The Karnataka government has launched a new plan to strengthen computer education in government schools in the state. Under the plan, computer labs called i-Code Labs will be started in select government schools. The program will be implemented from the academic session 2025-26 and its objective is that students of government schools can also get computer and coding education like students of private schools.
There are about 43,000 government schools in the state but only about 1,500 of these schools have computer labs in the true sense. Most schools do not even have basic facilities like computers, internet, or electricity, due to which students have to remain deprived of digital education.
On the other hand, almost all private schools provide coding and technical education to children with modern computer labs. The government has taken this initiative to reduce this gap.
What will happen in i-Code Labs?
Through i-Code Labs, students from classes 6 to 10 will be taught basic knowledge of computers along with coding and logical thinking. This will not only increase technical understanding but will also improve their thinking ability in other subjects. This project will be run in collaboration with Agastya Foundation, which will provide proper guidance and modern labs to the students.
The study will be done through the hub and spoke model.
This plan was announced by the state Chief Minister Siddaramaiah in the budget of 2025-26. According to this, 63 schools will be developed as 'hub schools', and 756 'spoke schools' associated with them will be directly connected to this network. This means that a hub school will provide computer education to many schools simultaneously.
New beginning of technology in education
With this initiative, children of government schools will also be prepared for the future related to technology. Skills like coding have become very important in today's digital world and this plan will make it possible for every child to become technically strong, irrespective of their economic or social background.
This plan of Karnataka is not only an educational reform but also an important step towards digital equality. This will give a new direction and a better future to lakhs of children studying in government schools. If this model is successful, it can become an example for the entire country.
