Meta Platforms Inc. has initiated another round of layoffs within its Reality Labs division which is responsible for its ambitious virtual and augmented reality initiatives including the popular Quest headsets and the interactive Horizon Worlds platform. This decision is part of Metas broader strategy to streamline operations in a rapidly evolving tech landscape.
Reality labs undergoes further reductions
The latest round of layoffs has greatly impacted teams within Oculus Studios which is Metas in-house game development studio dedicated to creating immersive experiences for the Quest virtual reality headsets. This includes developers working on VR titles such as Supernatural a fitness game tthat has gained traction due to its innovative approach to combining gaming and exercise.
Performance-based cuts continue
These layoffs are part of a series of workforce reductions that began earlier this year. In January the company announced plans to eliminate nearly 4000 roles as CEO Mark Zuckerberg emphasised his commitment to increasing performance standards across the company. Some sources revealed that these performance-driven cuts affected at least 560 positions reflecting the companys adjustment to ensure that talent aligns with its evolving objectives.
Strategic realignment and future outlook
Despite the continued layoffs Meta remains steadfast in its commitment to its metaverse ambitions. The company currently lists 495 open roles within the Reality Labs division actively encouraging impacted employees to consider applying for internal positions to retain talent. CTO Andrew Bosworth highlighted the crucial year ahead emphasising that 2025 is pivotal for the division particularly for the successful expansion of Horizon Worlds on mobile platforms an area that Meta sees as vital for engaging a broader user base and redefining social interaction in virtual spaces.
