Actress and singer Selena Gomez recently shared insights into her mental health journey, emphasizing the importance of advocacy. She stated, "Ultimately, it's crucial to speak out about issues that resonate with you, regardless of your fame." Gomez is set to receive the Woman of the Year award at the Billboard Latin Women in Music event on May 1, 2025.
She acknowledged the challenges of being open about personal struggles, noting, "It's not easy to put yourself out there, and you should be prepared for a variety of opinions when you dare to speak up."
Reflecting on her initial experiences discussing her mental health, Gomez admitted, "It was daunting to show that level of vulnerability, and I never wanted to be perceived as a victim." She expressed her hope that by sharing her story, she could inspire others, accepting any backlash as part of a larger conversation about mental health.
In October 2023, Gomez hosted her inaugural Rare Impact Fund Benefit at Nya Studios in Hollywood, aimed at supporting youth mental health initiatives. During the event, she revealed, "For a long time, I battled with my inner thoughts, feeling lost and hopeless. In 2020, I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, which brought clarity and understanding that I had long sought. This knowledge has made me more aware and less fearful than before."
