Eggs are a popular source of protein, rich in vitamins, minerals and fats that are extremely beneficial for health. According to Pratiksha Kadam, Chief Dietitian, Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, eggs have all nine essential amino acids required for building and repairing muscles.

Great sources of vitamins B12, choline that augment brain power, and lutein that is beneficial for eyes, eggs provide a feeling of satiety that lasts longer and destroys hunger cravings. They are good for heart health and help in losing weight as well.

But is it okay to eat 12 of them in a single day? Curious, indianexpress.com found out what the health implications on the body would be.

What happens when you have 12 eggs a day?

"One egg has around 186 mg of cholesterol. Eating a dozen eggs can easily exceed the recommended intake. This will have detrimental effects on heart health, particularly for those who already suffer from heart problems. Eggs, if deep fried in butter or oil, also contribute to even more LDL ("bad") cholesterol. Not to mention, excess protein intake can be damaging to the kidney," said Kadam.

She added that some might experience bloating, or other symptoms of digestive indigestion. If other food groups are avoided, depending on only eggs may create a scenario of nutrient deficiency.

"Eating 12 eggs on a daily basis can be harmful to health, specifically in terms of increasing cholesterol level and heart problems, although eggs are very nutritious," concluded Kadam.
