On Monday, Odisha experienced a welcome respite from the oppressive heatwave that had gripped the region for the past two weeks, thanks to rain brought by the nor'wester known as Kalbaisakhi.
Officials reported that the storm uprooted trees and electricity poles across various locations, including Bhubaneswar, leading to blocked roads.
Notably, several trees fell at the official residence of Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi.
Fire service teams were deployed to clear the fallen trees from the CM's residence grounds, according to a senior official.
The Disaster Management Department indicated that over 20 of the state's 30 districts experienced thunderstorms, lightning, hail, and strong winds, which severely impacted standing crops like paddy.
Minor damages to temporary houses and huts were noted in Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Bhadrak, and Balasore.
Forecasts predict continued thundershowers in most coastal areas and regions such as Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Angul, Dhenkanal, Boudh, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Koraput, and Malkangiri on Tuesday.
An 'orange' alert has been issued for Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Keonjhar, Bhadrak, and Jajpur, advising residents to prepare for thunderstorms on Tuesday afternoon.
The rainfall has significantly lowered maximum temperatures, with Bolangir being the only area to exceed 40 degrees Celsius, recording a high of 40.4 degrees.
