BEIJING: China said Tuesday, April 29, that the United States’ tariffs had “disrupted the international air transport market” and that this was the reason Beijing had decided to suspend taking in new planes from the aviation behemoth Boeing.

In a statement, China’s commerce ministry stated, “The stability of the global industrial chain and supply chain has been severely impacted by the United States’ use of tariffs.”

“According to a spokeswoman, relevant Chinese airlines and Boeing in the United States have suffered greatly.”

Beijing has retaliated with new 125-cent charges on U.S. imports after the United States raised tariffs on several Chinese goods to 145 percent.

Additionally, the CEO of Boeing revealed last week that the trade conflict has caused China to halt accepting new planes.

Chinese clients have “stopped taking delivery of aircraft due to the tariff environment,” according to Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg in a broadcast interview with CNBC. If the suspension persists, the aviation behemoth will soon sell the aircraft to other carriers.

Ortberg said that Boeing will not “wait too long” to ship the planes to other clients but that the firm had expected to deliver around 50 aircraft to China in 2025.

According to US President Donald Trump, Boeing should “defraud China for not taking the beautifully finished planes” after Beijing withdrew from the agreement.

Trump’s tariffs have caused “many companies to be unable to carry out normal trade and investment activities,” Beijing’s commerce ministry said on Tuesday.

“China is willing to continue to support the normal business cooperation between the two countries’ enterprises,” a representative for China said.

China “hopes that the United States can listen to the voices of enterprises and create a stable and predictable environment for their normal trade and investment activities,” they said.
