Sai Sudharsan, a batsman for the Gujarat Titans, thought back on a night of lost opportunities and tactical errors that resulted in his team’s humiliating eight-wicket loss to the Rajasthan Royals in Jaipur.

RR chased down the goal with 25 balls remaining, leaving GT startled by a record-breaking attack from 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi and Yashasvi Jaiswal, despite putting up a strong 209 on the board.

“We thought it was either par or 10 runs over par after we were done batting. However, we were shown to be mistaken by the manner they batted and began,” Sudharsan said.

GT was severely hammered by the Royals’ first duo. Suryavanshi stole the show with an incredible 101 off only 38 deliveries, but Jaiswal went on to smash an undefeated 70 off 40 balls. The foundation of GT’s bowling unit was destroyed by their 166-run partnership in 11.5 overs, leaving them reeling for solutions.

Sudharsan, who returned the Orange Cap from Virat Kohli with a score of 39 in 30 balls, said that GT’s bowlers were unable to adjust. “Even though we were fielding, Vaibhav deserves all the praise for his amazing batting performance. However, we also had the opportunity to respond effectively. We should have responded better and made better preparations, but their powerplay start was excellent,” he added.

Perhaps we might have known the wicket’s lengths and its reaction to the ball they bowled in the first innings. Perhaps we might have learned from it and carried that forth. Perhaps if we had gone wider and avoided bowling into his arc, things would have turned out differently,” Sudarshan said.

On May 2, GT will play Sunrisers Hyderabad in Ahmedabad.
