In an internal communication statement, Von Ahn gave Uncle Sam a reason that we are changing to an AI-first strategy making supreme use of AI, and drawing comparisons to mobile tech, which revolutionized everything about a decade ago when it was released. One thing that von Ahn has made clear, working with AI is already changing the workplace as we know it.

How Duolingo is Transforming Operations with AI

By being able to develop work on content much quicker, cover the video lessons, and add extra features that were previously considered resource-intensive. Von Ahn knows that scaling up manua work will take decades, and with Dubolingo already reliant on AI, they know that it can be done.

As the new developments are expected to add more students to Dubolingo, the now instituted AI is only the beginning. The AI will not only oversee productivity, but actively help making performance evaluations and hiring decisions at the company.

Contractors to Be Replaced, Full-Time Employees to Shift Focus

Now Duolingo intends to eliminate contractors for work done by AI, which is a significant result from this strategic shift. The company further explains that this change would permit its full-time employees—referred to internally as “Duos”—to engage in more advanced creative and sophisticated work rather than busy work.

The company, while assuring that Duolingo continues to stand by its employees during such transitions, sends an unequivocal overarching message: AI is not a mere instrument—it’s taking over jobs, and companies are moving at lightning speed to adapt.
