Withdrawing Cash from ATMs to Get Costlier from May 1: Major Banks Revise Fees After RBI Nod

Starting May 1, 2025, ATM cash withdrawals beyond the free transaction limit will become more expensive for customers of several major Indian banks. This change comes after the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) approved a revised framework for ATM charges, prompting banks like SBI, HDFC Bank, PNB, and Kotak Mahindra Bank to update their fee structures.

Why the Charges Are Changing

As per RBI’s updated guidelines, banks are allowed to revise the number of free ATM transactions per month and adjust fees charged for both financial (cash withdrawal) and non-financial transactions (like balance inquiry). The new framework is designed to promote transparency, standardize ATM usage charges across metro and non-metro areas, and ensure smoother operation of the ATM network.

While all banks are still required to offer a limited number of free ATM transactions each month, any additional transactions beyond this free limit will now incur higher fees, starting from May 1.

Banks That Have Announced Revised ATM Charges

Several banks have already issued public notifications informing customers of the fee hike. These include State Bank of India (SBI), HDFC Bank, Punjab National Bank (PNB), and IndusInd Bank.

Here’s a breakdown of the revised charges:
