Apple has increased its iPhone manufacturing in India to reduce dependency on China after the trade war between USA and Beijing. According to some media reports Apple wants to establish India as a manufacturing hub and in future wants to relocate a portion of its global iPhone production to the country by 2026. Recently Apple began iPhone production at a newly operational Tata Electronics plant in Hosur Tamil Nadu. This facility is focused on assembling older iPhone models. At the same time a $2.6 billion Foxconn plant is also under construction in Bengaluru Karnataka and set to start initial operations by May. The Foxconn facility when fully operational by December 2027 is expected to manufacture the latest iPhone models like the iPhone 16 and 16e. It produces around 300–500 units per hour. The plant may create around 50000 jobs and help the local economy. India’s Role In Apple’s Supply Chain China is currently a big player in Apple’s manufacturing with over 75% of global iPhone production. India’s share is also increasing at around 18% according to Counterpoint Research. Apple’s shift to India is mainly due to rising concerns over U.S. tariffs on Chinese-made goods. While electronics are not much part of it a risk to Apple’s supply chain could result in higher iPhone prices. In March Apple shipped 600 tons of iPhones of $2 billion from India to the U.S. Tata and Foxconn were major suppliers in it wherein Foxconn did $1.3 billion of exports. Tata Electronics a new Apple supplier but still established itself as a big partner in Apple’s Indian operations. Foxconn and Tata operate a total of five iPhone manufacturing facilities in India with their importance in Apple’s global supply chain. According to some media reports Apple may relocate the majority of U.S.-bound iPhone production to India by the end of 2026. As Apple is trying to diversify its manufacturing base India may become its important partner.
