A woman has shocked people by sharing the unusual way the people of Bern, Switzerland, commute to work in the summer months, which has many wondering how it works.

Olga is a Swiss content creator who has gained thousands of followers by sharing clips and hidden gems from across her home country. In a video which has been viewed over 1.4million times, she shared one yet common commuting option that some people take when the gets hotter. In her video, people are seen along the Aaere river, which runs through the city, enjoying their relaxing journey to wherever they need to be.

"Only in one month is already the season of commuting by river in Switzerland," she wrote on the , as commuters of all ages were seen floating by along the river's bright blue water.

While most of them were floating without any help, some were using pool noodles or other floating devices to help them stay above the water's surface. Some families were also seen using inflatable boats with their younger children onboard.

In a follow-up , Olga shared a list of 10 rules everyone wanting to experience the river commute should follow.

10 rules for a successful floating commute

The first thing on her list was that only experienced swimmers should get into the river due to its strong currents. She also warned against entering the river if no one else is in, claiming there may well be a good reason why - such as it being too cold or too fast. To check this, she recommended using the AaereGuru app, which will show you the actual temperature and speed of the river.

Next, she urged people to acclimatise to the temperature of the water, which is often quite cold as it comes from a glacier. She also urged people not to swim after drinking alcohol.

If you're in the water, Olga said the best entry point is Schönausteg, which has stairs for easy access.

"Another good start point is Eichholz where the river makes a natural pool to enter the water without stairs. The best exit point is Marzili with several exit stairs and swimming canal," she wrote on the post.

To get out of the water, she said: "Change your direction toward the exit in advance due to fast current."

While it might sound to commute by river, seeing as all your belongings would get wet, Olga recommended getting yourself a waterproof dry bag for valuables. This can be purchased from Loeb in Bern if you don't have one already, and if you're not in Switzerland, there are plenty of options online. She also recommended purchasing some water shoes to avoid injuring your feet on the rocks on the riverbed.

Finally, Olga said to not be scared of using a floatie to feel more safe if it's your first time floating through the river.

People were quick to take to the comment section of the video to share their thoughts, with many worrying about the safety of the tradition.

"doing that without a lift jacket is crazy, I swim 1000M everyday in my own pool and I'd wear a life jacket," one person wrote, to which Olga replied: "It’s different attitude here."

A second viewer asked: "Is it safe for people who can’t swim to do this? It feels so relaxing." To this, Olga replied: "You should be a good swimmer to do this, river could be dangerous."

Others were left jealous of the river commute system, as one viewer said: "Ah man, I wish I could do something like this here."

"oh but if I did this in the Mississippi I'm 'crazy' and might 'die'" another person said, while a third person wrote: "I feel like being born in Switzerland is like winning the lottery. What is this majestic place."

"Manifesting swiss citizenship," said another person.
