Chennai (Tamil Nadu) [India], April 30: A remarkable performance featuring half-centuries from captain Shreyas Iyer and Prabhsimran Singh, along with a hat-trick by Yuzvendra Chahal, propelled Punjab Kings (PBKS) to a four-wicket victory over Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at Chepauk Stadium on Wednesday.
With this win, PBKS climbed to second place in the standings, boasting six victories, three defeats, and one no result, totaling 13 points. In contrast, CSK finds itself at the bottom of the table with only two wins and eight losses, accumulating just four points.
During their chase of 191 runs, PBKS openers Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh continued their aggressive form from the last match, delivering powerful shots.
Priyansh struck boundaries against bowlers Khaleel Ahmed and Anshul Kambhoj, while Prabhsimran matched his intensity. However, their promising 44-run partnership ended when Khaleel dismissed Priyansh for 23 runs off 15 balls, with MS Dhoni taking a superb catch. PBKS was at 44/1 after 4.4 overs.
Shreyas Iyer concluded the powerplay with a boundary off Ravindra Jadeja, bringing the score to 50 runs in six overs, with himself (5*) and Prabhsimran (21*) still at the crease.
While Shreyas took his time to settle in, Prabhsimran continued to dominate the spinners Noor Ahmed and Jadeja.
At the halfway mark, PBKS stood at 88/1, with Shreyas (23*) and Prabhsimran (40*) not out.
Matheesha Pathirana's first over conceded 14 runs, allowing Prabhsimran to reach his second consecutive fifty of the tournament and third overall in just 31 balls, featuring five fours and three sixes. PBKS also crossed the 100-run mark in 11 overs.
Pathirana finally provided CSK with a breakthrough, dismissing Prabhsimran for 54 runs off 36 balls, which included five fours and three sixes. PBKS was then at 116/2 in 13 overs.
Shreyas kept the momentum going, scoring his fourth fifty of the tournament in 32 balls, hitting four boundaries and two sixes.
However, Pathirana struck again, removing Wadhera with a stunning catch from Jadeja for just five runs, leaving PBKS at 136/3 in 14.3 overs.
Iyer intensified the attack against Pathirana, scoring 20 runs in one over, including two sixes and a four. In the following over, Shashank Singh hit Jadeja for a four and a six before being dismissed for 23 runs off 17 balls. PBKS was at 180/4 in 17.3 overs.
Pathirana eventually got the better of Iyer, cleaning him up for 72 runs off just 41 balls, which included five fours and four sixes. PBKS was at 188/5 in 18.4 overs.
Although Suryansh Shegde was dismissed in the final over, PBKS secured the win, finishing at 194/6 in 19.4 overs, with Josh Inglis (6*) and Marco Jansen (4*) remaining not out.
For CSK, Khaleel Ahmed (2/28) and Pathirana (2/45) were the leading wicket-takers, but their efforts were in vain.
CSK's hopes of reaching the 200-run mark were thwarted by an outstanding performance from PBKS bowler Yuzvendra Chahal, who achieved his second IPL hat-trick, restricting the home team to 190 runs in 19.2 overs.
Despite a stellar innings of 88 runs off 47 balls from Sam Curran against his former team, CSK experienced a dramatic collapse in the final overs.
Choosing to bat first, CSK's innings began shakily as the young opening pair of Shaik Rasheed and Ayush Mhatre struggled. Rasheed was the first to go, scoring just 11 runs off 12 balls before being dismissed by Arshdeep Singh with the score at 21. Mhatre followed suit in the next over, falling to Marco Jansen for just 7 runs, leaving CSK at 22/2.
Ravindra Jadeja attempted to stabilize the innings with a quick 17 runs off 12 balls but was dismissed by Harpreet Brar, making it 48/3. Dewald Brevis then joined Curran, and the pair formed a crucial 78-run partnership to revive the innings.
Brevis contributed a composed 32 runs before being bowled by Azmatullah Omarzai. Curran, who was aggressive throughout, struck nine boundaries and four sixes, helping CSK recover from early setbacks. He was eventually dismissed by Jansen with the score at 172/5.
CSK captain MS Dhoni made a brief but impactful appearance, scoring 11 runs off just 4 balls, including a boundary and a towering six, before falling to Chahal. This moment proved pivotal as Chahal executed a brilliant hat-trick, dismissing Deepak Hooda, Anshul Kamboj, and Noor Ahmad in consecutive deliveries. His final figures of 4/32 in three overs highlighted his significant impact.
Arshdeep returned to dismiss Shivam Dube for 6 runs, and CSK was bowled out for 190 in 19.2 overs, falling short of a potential 200-plus total.
In addition to Chahal's remarkable performance, Arshdeep and Jansen each took two wickets, while Omarzai and Brar contributed one wicket each.
Brief Scores: CSK: 190 (Sam Curran 88, Dewald Brevis 32, Yuzvendra Chahal 4/32) lost to PBKS: 194/6 in 19.4 overs (Shreyas Iyer 71, Prabhsimran Singh 54, Khaleel Ahmed 2/28).
