Bhopal: The opposition is engaged in a “race” to claim credit for the Cabinet’s decision to conduct the caste census, according to Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan. He also asked Rahul Gandhi why, since independence, Congress administrations had never carried out a caste census.
Congress and the INDI-Alliance parties are competing to claim credit for the Union Cabinet’s caste census decision. On Wednesday night, Chouhan stated, “I would want to ask Rahul Gandhi ji why the caste census was never conducted under the Congress administration.
According to him, Jawaharlal Nehru, the nation’s first prime minister, was not a “supporter of reservation on the basis of caste.” He stated that Manmohan Singh and Indira Gandhi did not support it either.
“In a letter to chief ministers, first prime minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru ji said that he opposed caste-based reservations. Caste and caste censuses were always something he opposed. Congress has consistently opposed the caste census. Indira Gandhi opposed the establishment of the Mandal Commission in 1980. “The caste census was never discussed, despite Manmohan Singh’s assurances to the contrary,” the Union Agriculture Minister said.
“The nature of Congress is to propagate misinformation and misunderstanding.” Rahul Gandhi is now rushing to claim the credit, but he must first explain why Congress did not conduct a caste census,” Chouhan said.
He promised the public that the census would be done openly and for everyone’s benefit.
“The caste census will be open and accessible. The advantages of each component will be considered. We will develop the plans for each section’s welfare based on accurate facts, he said.
Rahul Gandhi, a Congress leader, had earlier requested the BJP to provide a deadline but reiterated the party’s support for the government’s plan to carry out caste enumeration during the next population census.
Speaking at a news conference here, Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, said that Telangana has offered a caste census model that may serve as a guide for the national effort.
He said that the administration had “suddenly after 11 years” made this decision in response to the Congress’s demands for a caste census.
“We promised to carry out the Caste Census in the Parliament. Additionally, we had said that we would address the existing barriers and reconsider the 50% reservation limit. According to Narendra Modi, there are just four castes. Rahul Gandhi said, “I don’t know what happened, but the Caste Census was announced after 11 years.”
“We want a timeframe, but we fully support it. We would want to know when this will occur. The first step is this. In the Caste Census, Telangana has emerged as a model that might serve as a template. We offer the government our assistance in creating the Caste Census. He said, “There are two examples: Telangana’s and Bihar’s, and they vary greatly from one another.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs voted Wednesday to include caste enumeration in the next census.
At a media conference after the cabinet meeting, Ashwini Vaishnaw, the minister of information and broadcasting, said the decision shows the current government’s dedication to the nation’s and society’s holistic interests and values.
