In their IPL encounter at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Wednesday, Punjab Kings upset Chennai Super Kings by four wickets thanks to an outstanding fifty from captain Shreyas and a hat-trick from Yuzvendra Chahal. The primary run-makers for PBKS were opener Prabhsimran Singh (54, 36b, 5×4, 3×6) and Shreyas (72, 41b, 5×4, 4×6), who helped them surpass the 191-run goal in 19.4 overs. Hosts CSK reached a tough 190 all out thanks to Sam Curran’s 88.
Earlier, Yuzvendra Chahal became the first player this season to do the feat, turning back time and lighting up the IPL 2025 with an incredible hat-trick against Chennai Super Kings. The former Purple Cap holder took four wickets in six balls during the stunning collapse that occurred in the 19th over of CSK’s innings, crushing the Super Kings’ late-innings comeback. It was Chahal’s second IPL hat-trick since 2023 and his first since his historic run against the Kolkata Knight Riders in 2022.
He had startled KKR with a four-wicket over on that occasion, and on Wednesday he followed the same pattern, this time donning the colours of the Punjab Kings and pursuing the formidable CSK.
MS Dhoni lit up the stadium with a six over long-on to start the over, raising the possibility of a late flourish. However, Chahal’s response was controlled and precise. Dhoni was caught at long-off attempting to recreate the hit with his very next delivery. After a few runs, Deepak Hooda miscued a back-foot drive and was collected by Priyansh Arya within the circle.
The pressure was on with two wickets in three deliveries. Here comes CSK’s Impact Player, Anshul Kamboj. But Chahal was the only one who felt the effect. The stumps were broken and the bat was beaten by a skiddy leg-break. After entering, Noor Ahmad attempted to clear the fence with the last ball of the over, but he was only able to make a straightforward catch to Marco Jansen, who was coming in from long-on. Chahal scored his second IPL hat-trick in an instant, leaving CSK stunned at 190 all out after being 184 for 6.
After the innings, Chahal spoke candidly about the mentality that underlies the magic. “I was feeling great. Mahi bhai was in front of me in the 19th over, and I thought anything could happen, but the goal was to take wickets. There were five fielders inside, and the spinner said, “The plan was to bowl on the stumps and to bowl wide, not bowl easy balls and play with the batter’s mind.”
Chahal also described his own post-accomplishment party. The memes were the source of everything, and I had intended to celebrate if I achieved a five-fer or a hat-trick. Although 190 is a high score, it is difficult to pursue since the ball twists as it gets older. It would be great if they could find this.
