New Rules from May 1: ATM Withdrawal, Milk, LPG, Railway Booking—5 Big Changes That Will Hit Your Wallet
Siddhi Jain May 01, 2025 03:15 PM

As May begins, a series of new rules and price revisions have come into effect across India from May 1, 2025. These changes range from banking charges and milk prices to LPG cylinder rates and railway booking rules—directly impacting the common man’s day-to-day life and monthly budget. Let’s take a detailed look at what’s new from today.

💳 1. ATM Withdrawals Become Costlier

From May 1, withdrawing cash from ATMs beyond the free limit will now cost more. Banks have increased the post-limit transaction charge from ₹21 to ₹23 per withdrawal.

  • Free limit remains unchanged:

    • Own bank ATMs: 5 free transactions per month.

    • Other bank ATMs: 3 free in metro cities, 5 in non-metros.

Once the free limit is exhausted, ₹23 per extra transaction will now be charged. This move is likely to increase digital transactions while subtly discouraging excessive cash withdrawals.

🥛 2. Amul Hikes Milk Prices by ₹2 per Litre

Starting today, Amul has increased the price of its entire milk range by ₹2 per litre, citing higher input and production costs.

New prices for 500 ml packs (effective May 1):

  • Amul Gold: ₹35 (was ₹33)

  • Amul Taaza: ₹29 (was ₹27)

  • Amul Standard: ₹32 (was ₹30)

  • Amul Buffalo Milk: ₹38 (was ₹36)

  • Amul Cow Milk: ₹29 (was ₹27)

  • Amul Slim & Trim: ₹26 (was ₹24)

  • Amul Chai Maza: ₹33 (was ₹31)

This is likely to affect households directly, especially in metro cities where Amul enjoys a large customer base.

🚆 3. Railway Ticket Booking Rules Revised

The Indian Railways has implemented two major changes from May 1:

  • Waiting List Tickets: Now valid only in general coaches. You can no longer board sleeper or reserved coaches with a waitlisted ticket.

  • Advance Reservation Period (ARP): Reduced from 120 days to 60 days. This means passengers can now book train tickets only 60 days in advance.

The move is aimed at curbing misuse of waitlisted tickets and making ticket bookings more realistic and streamlined.

🔥 4. Commercial LPG Cylinder Becomes Cheaper

Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) have reduced the price of 19 kg commercial LPG cylinders by ₹14.50 per cylinder. This change came into effect from May 1, offering some relief to restaurants, hotels, and commercial establishments.

  • No change in domestic LPG cylinder prices, which remain the same.

Although the cut is modest, it's a welcome move for businesses battling inflationary pressures.

✈️ 5. Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) Prices Slashed

OMCs have also reduced aviation fuel prices by ₹3,954.38 per kilolitre, effective today. This price cut is expected to bring down airfares, especially during the upcoming summer travel rush.

Lower ATF costs benefit airlines by reducing operating expenses, which may be passed on to passengers through more competitive pricing.
