Citing rising input costs in the manufacture of the commodity, the marketing federation that controls the dairy brand stated on Wednesday that all Amul milk varieties nationwide would see price increases of Rs 2 per litre starting on May 1 (Thursday).
According to a statement from the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), the rise of Rs 2 per litre corresponds to a 3–4% increase in MRP (maximum retail price), which is much less than the average rate of food inflation.
Using the well-known ‘Amul’ brand, the federation with its headquarters in Anand, Gujarat, sells dairy products.
“GCMMF, the marketer of milk and milk products under the brand name of Amul, has increased the prices of fresh pouch milk by Rs 2 per litre effective from May 1, 2025, in all markets across the country,” said the organisation.
The federation said that since June 2024, fresh pouch milk costs had not grown.
“This price rise is being implemented since the cost of milk production inputs for our 36 lakh milk farmers has increased. Over the last year, our member unions have likewise raised farmers’ prices by the same amount,” the statement said.
A 500ml packet of Amul Gold milk would cost Rs 34 after the rise, while a one-litre pouch of the same brand will cost Rs 67 starting on Thursday in Gujarat, the statement said.
In Gujarat, a 500ml bag of the “Shakti” variety would now cost Rs 31. In contrast, a 500ml container of cow milk will cost Rs 29.
Buffalo Milk pouches will cost Rs 73 per litre, while ‘Taaza’ pouches will cost Rs 55 per litre starting on May 1, according to the statement.
The cost of liquid milk has already increased by much to Rs 2 per litre due to Mother Dairy.
The markets in Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Uttarakhand, and Delhi-NCR will all see the pricing changes take effect.
With effect from April 30, 2025, Mother Dairy is required to increase the consumer price of its liquid milk by up to Rs. 2 per litre. The substantial rise in procurement prices, which have increased by Rs. 4 to 5 per litre over the last three months, has made this price adjustment necessary. A Mother Dairy representative said on Tuesday that the early start of summer and hot conditions are the main causes of the increase in procurement costs.
The cost of bulk-vended milk (toned) has gone up from Rs 54 to Rs 56 per litre. Previously, full cream milk cost Rs 68 per litre; now, it costs Rs 69.
Cow milk is now priced at Rs 57 per litre instead of Rs 56, and double-toned milk, which was previously priced at Rs 49 per litre, is now Rs 51.
