Born in a Punjabi family in Rawalpindi (now Pakistan) in British India on 1 May 1913, the journey of Balraj Sahni was quite inspiring. He died in 1973 at the age of just 59, but by then he had left an indelible mark in Indian cinema. The funny thing is that he was also active in freedom movements and continued to complete the shooting of his films despite going to jail.
Shooting anecdote in jail
The late TV presentator and actress Tabassum shared an interesting anecdote of Balraj Sahni. Balraj got a chance to work in the film Halcha, released in 1951. The film's director K Asif signed Balraj at the behest of Dilip Kumar. The shooting started that Balraj joined a procession in Mumbai. During this time violence erupted and many people including Balraj Sahni were arrested.
The shooting of the film was no longer stopped and Balraj was in jail. K Asif sought permission from the jail administration to bring Balraj out for shooting. Luckily the jailer was a fan of Balraj himself, so he gave permission. What was it then – Balraj would leave for shooting every morning, shoot with two policemen and return to jail in the evening. This series lasted for about three months until he was released.
Balraj Sahni's film journey
Balraj Sahni started his career in 1946 with the film justice. He got his real identity from the film Dharti Ke Lal, which came in the same year. His most talked about film was Do Bigha Zameen (1953), for which he was highly appreciated. Apart from this, he worked in superhit films like puppet, sister -in -law, betting market, younger sister, illiterate, bustle, time, peace, two ways, Ek Phool Do Mali, Talaash.
His son Pariksit Sahni is also a well-known name of Bollywood, who played important roles in hit films like PK, Three Idiots, Lage Raho Munna Bhai, Sultan.
