A comedian's show has been scrapped after sparking outrage with a vile joke about the horror crash at 's victory parade. The crash, which took place during Premier League title celebrations, saw a vehicle plough through fans at up to 30mph. The driver, a 53-year-old white British man from West Derby, was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, dangerous driving, and driving under the influence of drugs. Witnesses claimed he had been tailgating an ambulance before hitting pedestrians near the waterfront area, which had been closed to traffic. Horrifying footage captured the chaos as bodies were flung into the air and screams echoed through the crowd.
Comic Andrew Lawrence has been blasted after he shared a tweet in the aftermath of the incident. He wrote: "To be fair, if I was in Liverpool, I'd drive through crowds of people to get the f** out of there as well." The sickening joke was made just hours after Merseyside Police confirmed that 11 victims were still recovering in hospital following the terrifying incident, which left at least 65 people injured. One child was among four people who had to be extracted from beneath the wheels of the car by firefighters.
Caddies, a popular comedy venue in Southend, has since axed Lawrence's upcoming show following a flood of complaints.
They said: "The event organisers who had hired our Club for the Andrew Lawrence night, have cancelled the event.
"We do not condone or support the comment that has been made online, and we send everyone impacted by the tragic events in Liverpool our support and prayers."
The comic, who once appeared on BBC's Live At The Apollo and Ideal, tried to defend himself, blaming "online trolls" for the cancellation.
He posted: "This venue lost their courage after being bombarded with abuse and threats of violence from online trolls. Understandable, but disappointing. I will reschedule for later in the year at a different venue Southend, sorry for the inconvenience, have a great day."
The excuse did little to stem the fury as Garston-born actor Barry Sloane fumed: "You absolute disgrace."
Hillsborough Survivors Support Alliance CIC added: "A comedian really? You're an embarrassment to the profession."
The comic also sparked fury in 2021, with a string of comedy clubs cancelling his shows after he made racist "jokes" on Twitter about England football stars following England's heartbreaking penalty shoot-out defeat to Italy.
