For over 1.2 crore central government employees and pensioners, a long-awaited update has arrived, one that brings with it a sense of relief and hope. The Indian government has initiated key steps toward forming the 8th Pay Commission, and the signs are promising.
On April 21, the Department of Expenditure (Doe), under the Ministry of Finance, issued two important circulars. These documents begin the process of appointing 42 officials, including a chairman, two senior members, advisors, and other supporting staff. If progress continues on schedule, the commission may officially start functioning by the end of the next month.
Reports suggest that the chairman and two key members have already been selected, and formal announcements are expected soon. The remaining posts will largely be filled through deputation from various government departments.
Unlike the 7th Pay Commission, which had 45 members, the upcoming 8th Pay Commission will operate with a smaller team. This reflects the government’s intent to create a more focused and efficient body. Over the years, the size of previous commissions has varied, with the 6th and 5th commissions having significantly fewer members.
The staff side of the National Council (JCM) is also gearing up. In a meeting held on April 22, key issues such as minimum wage, pay scale structure, fitment factor, promotion policies, and pension reforms were discussed. A drafting committee has been formed to consolidate demands from major staff federations. Organisations have been asked to submit their suggestions by May 20, 2025.
Although the official formation and terms of reference (TOR) of the 8th Pay Commission are still awaited, internal preparations signal that the government is serious about launching it soon. If implemented well, this could mark a turning point in the financial well-being of millions of government employees and their families.
