In his direct remarks on trade between the US and India, US Vice President JD Vance called Prime Minister Narendra Modi a “tough negotiator” who has long taken advantage of the US.

Vance said that “good negotiations” on tariffs were currently underway with India in an appearance with Fox News on Thursday.

India is one of the nations working with the US to avoid the hefty import duties that President Donald Trump has declared, the majority of which are now on hold.

“Modi, the Prime Minister, is a tough negotiator, but we’re going to rebalance that relationship, and that’s why the President’s doing what he’s doing,” Vance said in the course of the conversation.

“Is India the first deal coming through?” During the interview, Vance was questioned. “I’m not sure whether this will be your first transaction, but I do believe it will be one of the first. “We have talks with Japan, Korea, some people in Europe, and of course, we have a good negotiation going on in India,” Vance said, referring to the President’s upcoming visit.

On April 2, US President Trump declared broad retaliatory tariffs on many nations, including China and India. However, when over 75 nations contacted America for trade agreements, he stated on April 9 that these tariffs would be suspended for 90 days, until July 9 of this year, with the exception of those on China and Hong Kong.
