According to a Bloomberg article, Apple is working with Anthropic to build strong AI-driven coding help for Xcode in secret. Anthropic’s Claude Sonnet model will be included into the next version of Xcode, enabling the computer to “write, edit, and test code on behalf of programmers,” according to Bloomberg.

There has been no indication as of yet as to whether the tool will be made publicly accessible; it is currently being implemented internally within Apple. Developers might use a chat-based interface to manage code-related activities, test user interface elements, and help monitor and repair bugs if it were made available. Apple failed to comment when asked by a famous media outlet, while Danielle Ghiglieride, a spokesman for Anthropic, declined to provide information.

Apple’s action is in line with a larger trend in the industry, where big tech firms are using AI to expedite software development. “Maybe 20 to 30 percent of the code that is inside of our repos today in some of our projects is probably all written by software,” said Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella earlier. To improve ChatGPT’s coding skills, OpenAI is apparently considering acquiring the AIcoding platform Windsurf for $3 billion.

This development follows Apple’s WWDC 2024 announcement of “Swift Assist,” its own AI-based coding assistance, albeit the feature hasn’t been released yet. Claude Sonnet’s hiring may indicate Apple’s haste to overtake rivals in the AI market.

Apple has postponed the rollout of its updated Siri as it continues to improve its AI services. The business acknowledged that the rollout of the update, which was initially unveiled in June 2024, will take longer than anticipated. In a strategic change, Mike Rockwell, the previous director of Vision Pro development, has taken over Siri’s supervision from AI leader John Giannandreato.
