UPI transactions are set to become faster and more efficient. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has introduced a new rule to make UPI payments quicker and more secure. This rule will come into effect from June 16, 2025.

New Rule Issued by NPCI

On April 26, 2025, NPCI issued a circular instructing all banks and UPI-enabled apps (like PhonePe, Google Pay, Paytm, etc.) to implement the new system starting June 16.

Currently, UPI facilitates digital transactions worth around ₹25 lakh crore every month. With the introduction of the new system, response time and processing speed will significantly improve, meaning money transfers will happen even faster.

This update is designed to enhance the overall user experience by reducing transaction delays and improving reliability.

What Changes for Users?

According to Moneycontrol, the updated NPCI guidelines aim to improve speed, dependability, and transaction success rate.

Under the new rules:

  • Banks and payment apps must respond to various UPI services faster than before.

  • Pending or failed transactions are expected to reduce.

  • Sending/receiving money or scanning QR codes for payments will be quicker, smoother, and safer.

  • Everyday users will directly benefit from these improvements in reliability and performance.

Updated Response Times

NPCI has mandated reduced response times for key services:

  • Request Pay & Response Pay: Cut from 30 seconds to 15 seconds

  • Transaction status check or reversal: Must be completed within 10 seconds

  • UPI address (ID) verification: Also reduced to 10 seconds

NPCI has also directed that these improvements must not cause any disruption in the system. Payment apps and banks are expected to upgrade infrastructure accordingly.

Why This Change Now?

This move comes at a time when UPI services have faced multiple outages recently. Users reported payment delays, failures, or stuck transactions, which affected public trust in the system. These issues prompted NPCI to take decisive action to improve service reliability and speed.

Conclusion:
Starting June 16, UPI payments will be faster, safer, and more dependable – ensuring a smoother digital payment experience for millions of users across India.
