As tensions between Pakistan and India grow, the scenario is also spilling over into social media. Recently, actress Urwa Hocane made a statement on Instagram that most people interpreted as being addressed to fellow actress Hania Aamir.
Urwa spoke about the importance of self-respect and standing with your nation during difficult times. Without mentioning names, she wrote, “Propaganda is a weapon used in wars, and sadly, we’ve been facing it for decades. In times of conflict, one should protect their dignity and support their people.” She also added that “taking care of your own home should come first.”
This came after Hania Aamir thanked her Indian fans who used VPNs to view her Instagram, which was reportedly blocked in India. One fan had commented, “Hello Hania, I purchased a VPN just for you. Love from India,” and Hania had responded with, “Love you.” Another commented, “We’ll watch your posts from Mars if we have to,” and Hania had responded with, “Saqday,” a cute word in Urdu.
Since the Indian ban on Instagram, Hania’s posts have lost likes and comments, which were once in millions but now are merely in thousands. Other Pakistani stars have also been impacted by these limitations.
This comes after India was reported to have frozen accounts of leading Pakistani personalities, such as Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, the DG ISPR, and Information Minister Attaullah Tarar. These moves drew stern responses from the Pakistani government and citizens.
Urwa’s post has raised controversy on social media. Some individuals concur with her regarding safeguarding national pride, while others think it is necessary for artists to remain in touch with their global fans.
