Synopsis

The White House's Star Wars Day post featuring Trump with a red lightsaber backfired, drawing criticism for associating him with the villainous Sith Lords. This followed an AI-generated image of Trump as the Pope that also faced backlash. Adding to the controversy, Trump announced a proposed 100% tariff on all foreign-made films, citing national security concerns.

The White House tried to celebrate Star Wars Day on Sunday with a photo of US President Donald Trump, but the post ended up being a bit of a blunder.

On X (formerly Twitter), the White House shared a meme of Trump dressed like a Jedi, the heroes from the Star Wars films. But instead of using a Jedi’s blue or green lightsaber, Trump was shown holding a red one. In Star Wars, red lightsabers are used by the villains, the Sith Lords, who are part of the dark side.

Ironically, the post was trying to say Trump was fighting against the "Empire", which it compared to the opposition Democrats.

The caption read, "Happy May the 4th to all, including the Radical Left Lunatics who are fighting so hard to bring Sith Lords, Murderers, Drug Lords, Dangerous Prisoners, & well-known MS-13 Gang Members, back into our Galaxy. You’re not the Rebellion, you’re the Empire. May the 4th be with you."

Many people online were quick to point out the mistake. If Trump is holding a red lightsaber, it actually makes him look like a Sith, not a Jedi. This is awkward since the post tried to show him as a hero.

This comes just one day after the White House posted an AI-generated image of Trump dressed as the Pope, which also received heavy criticism online.

On the same day, Trump made another big announcement, he said the US will place a 100% tariff on all films made outside America.

Trump posted on Truth Social, calling it a national security issue. “This is a concerted effort by other Nations and, therefore, a National Security threat. It is, in addition to everything else, messaging and propaganda,” he wrote.

He added that he was asking government bodies like the Department of Commerce to begin work on imposing this new rule immediately.
